We will come back to movies ...and food

But first - Guilty pleasure TV shows!!!!!

When not in a play I watch a lot of TV. I am omitting the good shows I watch, like Family Guy and Colbert Report and Lost and The Medium and Ace of Cakes and ...well, you get the picture. the following list is truly bad TV - unquestionably embarrassing.

These are in no particular order...they are all bad.

Gilmore Girls (like a lifetime movie on crack)

American Idol (what will Simon say next?)

Any Lifetime movie (usually named things like "the Widow on the Hill" or "Daddy Drinks because you cry." or my personal favorite: "Mother, May I Sleep With Danger?" - good stuff.)

The Girls Next Door (I seriously love those girls- I like to pretend we are all friends)

Hannah Montana (like watching a train wreck - I just can't stop)

7th Heaven (so bad it is funny good- In one of my favorite episodes the husband almost leaves his wife because she admitted to smoking pot...once....in College....and someone died as a result, of course. Hey - maybe my Mom wrote that episode?)

Good Times (JJ Walker is DYNAMITE)

Walker, Texas Ranger (Steve likes to stop on this while channel surfing just for a good laugh - I love the episode when he wrestles with a bear)

E News / Entertainment Tonight (Gotta see what my peeps are up to)

Guiding Light (after 25 + years, Reva never dissapoints)

Guilty Pleasures TV.....

America's Next Top Model (Quite possibly the single most brilliant tv show in history)

American Idol (I know, right?)

Extreme Home Makeover (Gotta love that Ty)

Real World/Road Rules Challange (some of those "kids" are, like, my age)

TransAmerican Love Story (The amazing Logo Network show where an M to F trans looks for "true love")

Fame, the tv show (This is now out on DVD. You gotta get it!)

Antiques Roadshow (riveting!)

Torchwood (BBC Sci-fi - extremely satifying, like a big plate of mac and cheese)

Sparki

I don't have cable, so my choices are quite limited, but here are some of my guilty TV pleasures:

Oprah
The show where they swap wives-HILARIOUS
Super Nanny
The Apprentice
Today Show
Dr. Phil, if I'm home sick from work

I'd love to say that I balance all this trash with other, more classy programming, but that would not be accurate. I just have to admit that trashy TV amuses me!

Did you try the onion thing last night? I love that you called me from the grocery store. You rock.

...and last but not least- Xena, Warrior Princess!!

TV Queen I am...and I take exception to Gilmore Girls being bad TV. Genius writing and chemistry, but I digress:

Dancing With the Stars
Deal or No Deal
Law and Order - love original and SVU, not crazy about Criminal Intent
CSI - all
Ghost Whisperer
How I Met Your Mother
Two and a Half Men
ABC Soaps - it's a love/hate thing
American Idol - but I've about run my course with them - they get on my nerves now more than not.
Eight Simple rules reruns

yes Lisa - I do like most of the writing on Gilmore Girls - I see what they are trying to do and I love the speed of it being ala - "His Girl Friday" - they are just definetly trying too hard in most episodes - also - I am about 20 years too old to be enjoying it as much as I am.
I totally forgot the Housewives of Orange County and now - the Real Housewives of NYC - I might even like that better.
Janine - stay tuned for the onion pie story...when you least expect it. (I don't know what that means)

I still love you! I'm a total GG geek. I have seen every season at least twice and the earlier seasons at least three or four times. See, it comes on at 5 on ABC Family, and I watch it or have it on even though I know what they're going to say before they say it. I need therapy.

What about Blowout (I think that is what it was called - it is off the air now) with that narcissitic, emotionally abusive, one-trick hair stylist, Jonathan. After writing this I cannot believe I named one of the twins Jonathan without making this connection. I guess that is a good thing. Along the same lines was the Restaurant with the supremely hot and shallow Rocco Dispirito. And for really bad train wreck, fake reality TV, how about Hell's Kitchen.

Right now my most consistent guilty pleasure watching is "My House is Worth What?" on HGTV.

Lisa - I watch it at 5 also - you know I love it when I choose GG over Oprah everyday after work!
And that Luke - what a hunk!!

Everyone who finds out I have twins asks me if I watch Jon & Kate Plus 8. The answer is no. I have enough insanity in my own home, I don't need to watch other people struggle with their kids. Plus, if I watch and see how hard they have it, it might make me feel like I can't complain about how hard I have it!

When I am pregnant, which will NEVER happen again, I like to watch the pregnancy and birth shows like Special Delivery. Who are those women who will give birth in a bathtub at home with their family and tv crew around?

And as for chucking modesty (this is SO not the word I'm looking for) to the wind, how about Real Sex on HBO? Gotta love the people with the pony and diaper fetishes. Taxicab Confessions is another one.

JB said...

suzanne - I have a few friends who did the birth in the bathtub thing (not with a camera crew though)
not that I know about. I wish I wasn't too old to have a baby that way but I am sure if I ever have one they will make me go in the hospital. I hate hospitals!!

OMG, does anyone remember the show Small Wonder...where the dad makes a robot girl and everyone thinks she's real? Hysterical. I can't really think of any others. I will admit to watching Hannah Montana, That's so Raven and the Sweet Life of Zach and Cody at 1 AM. Oh wait...what about Saved By the Bell? Didn't it also seem behind the times? They were wearing acid washed jeans in 92? Memories....Leli

Regretfully and For the sake of fairness I must add Make me a Super Model.

JB said...

and I almost remember Small Wonder - I think it was a little past my time. I do remember Saved By The Bell - my roommate has every episode on DVD!!! I pick on her about that.

jb, I also am quite a "vidiot"! I love watching t.v. when not doing a show. I'm just now getting brave enough to comment on blogs again. I read your blog all the time by the way and love it!

Here are some of my "guilty pleasure" t.v. shows

Top Chef
Nip/Tuck
The Real Housewives (love calling Fern to talk about these botox beauties)
Being Bobby Brown (heinous of me, but I could NEVER turn the channel if it came on.)
How Clean is Your House on BBC. (those ladies are hilarious...and some people live like PIGS. I always feel better about my housecleaning after watching it)

And, jb, regarding Lifetime movies. LOL!!! I have SEEN "Mother May I Sleep With Danger"!!! Tori Spelling, right? Joe gives me endless crap about watching that channel, which he has dubbed "the women's problems channel". :-)

JB said...

ha-ha! Yes - it starred Tori Spelling!
The best line on Real Housewives this season was when they all toasted "To being real" - I guess it is all relative!
Thanks for commenting Debra!!!

Top Chef is great

Biggest looser, the strange thing is that I watch it on Tuesdays and almost every wednesday I have some excuse to not go to the gym.

Nick at Night, we are currently into the current crop of shows including George Lopez.

I will stop anytime I come across any of the really tacky VH1 shows, and watch for a few minutes, I Love New York, Flava of Love, I hate them and have never watched more than a couple of minutes at a time, but I always stop.

Ooo, Steve - I love Biggest Loser. In the very first episode, I was stunned and appalled that they were tempting them with a MOUNTAIN of doughnuts, but then I was hooked!

Suzanne said...

JB - you are not too old to have a baby (in a bathtub or in a hospital, however you wish). I am, at 41, living proof that along with a huge wad of cash and medical intervention at it's finest, having a baby at an advanced maternal aga (AMA) is possible. Sometimes you even get a two-for-one deal as I did!

Xena Warrior Princess! That's all I need.

PLEASE tell me someone watched NoTORIous. It was fantastic, just totally wonderful. Made me laugh out loud every episode.

Arties32 said...

OH, and, Robyn- you rock.

JB said...

Sissy - everyone has told me to watch that - I must netflix them if I can - I have only heard graet things about it!
