The American President
Baby Boom
What's Up Doc?
Fried Green Tomatoes
Cinderella (the TV version with Lesley Ann Warren)
My Cousin Vinny
Grease
Sleepless in Seattle
Home Alone
Titanic (who can resist Kate Winslet in those costumes?)

I should have put Pee Wee's Christmas Special but I think that was made for TV - not that there are any hard and fast rules here.
Carrie was going to be on my list but I honestly think it is too good for a guilty pleaseure list. But that is just my opinion, of course.
And Robyn, I understand about Kate Winslet, really.

I think my guilty pleasures were on the other list - I'm open about my unintellectualness :-) but I'll give it a shot...

Bring It On
Pretty Woman
Beetlejuice
Top Gun
Die Hard
Miss Congeniality (both)
Transformers
Lethal Weapon
All Elvis flicks
Stepmom

I almost put Titanic on my list- and I would definitely include Overboard and take off Hedwig (too good for guilty pleasure) but I didn't want to overdo Overboard. If I am channel surfing, I have to stop on it. I just have to. I love Goldie Hawn.

I know Sissy. I am not proud to say I know every line in that movie (Overboard) and quote it quite a bit. Goldie is as good as Kirt is bad! But I love Bad Billy Pratt!!!

Speaking of Overboard, I recently saw an episode of Gilligan's Island (talk about guilty pleasure) that featured a pre-adolescent Kurt Russell as a jungle boy. It was pretty stupid! And by the way, Mary Ann, who was recently caught smoking marijuana in her car, had kinda large thighs. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

JB said...

Robyn - you made me LOL. I saw the mugshot of Mary Ann and felt so bad for her. It looked like she just went on a 3 hour tour...if you know what I mean........

ok, jb first time leaving comment on your blog. Let's see about some guilty pleasure movies.

What's Up Doc
Wedding Crashers
Cable Guy
Zoolander(So stupid, but Joe and I quote it all the time..oh well)
Titanic
The Fugitive (yum Harrison Ford)
Pretty Woman (b/c she gets to SHOP)
The Wedding Singer
Never Been Kissed
Mission Impossible (why did Tom Cruise go crazy?)

There are plenty of others, but I tried to stick with ten in no particular order. :-)

Who can resist Kate Winslet OUT of those costumes???

(PS: My daughters make fun of me because I say Kate Winslet is the one woman I would leave their mother for.)

I love your list, Lisa! I had almost forgotten about Beetlejuice!

This is embarrassing but here goes:
She’s the Man
Braveheart
Tombstone
Real Genius
Batman (Tim Burton version)
High School Musical (1 and 2!)
Miss Congeniality (1st one)
Freaky Friday (Jamie Lee Curtis version!)
Ghostbusters
Any James Bond movie

Bonus:
Anything with Catherine Zeta-Jones. Turn off sound. Just watch her.

I've mixed my guilty pleasures list with my sophisticated movie list.

This Is Spinal Tap would have to be on my top ten. It regularly brings me to tears from laughing so hard, and every time I watch it I discover some new joke or hysterical reference. One of the twins, Alex, is very, very, very loud when he cries. I want to make him a t-shirt with a little dial on it that says "this one goes to eleven."

For caper/suspense movies, how about The Usual Suspects. I saw that movie with Phil Greenspan, a med student I knew at OSU back in younger days. I figured the twist out before the very end, but when "Verbal" morphed into his Kaizer Souze, Phil let out an audible gasp and about pooped his pants. Love, love, love that movie!

And you can't forget Hedwig. Touching story, awesome music, and fun. Had Sam and I not been on a "date" with another couple when we saw it, I would have purchased a ticket to see the next show right away. And Yitzak's dad is a prof in the department at Wayne State where I was (and maybe will be again) pursuing my Master's. Oh, I just see that Jenn has Hedwig on her list. Great minds....

Dog Day Afternoon. Saw it as a younger person, probably in my tween years, and it made quite an impression on me. My father remembers the true story it was based on.

No groans please, but When Harry Met Sally was so much fun. I know by know it has gotten a bit old, and romantic comedies are a real drag (did they change, or did I?), but weren't we all crazy about that movie when it came out?

Cars - I can watch this with my 4 year old son and not feel like I need to poke my eyes out. And I can allow him to watch it without worrying that he'll have a nightmare because someone's mother got eaten or their father got shot or someone had an evil spell cast on them by a witch or some other scary thing. Seriously, what is up with all of those Disney movies?

Hilary and Jackie - oh my gosh. I just bawled in this movie.

Antonia's Line. First of all, anything in Dutch is music to my ears. Secondly, this movie was visually beautiful. A bit kooky, but a powerful woman's movie. Chocolat was similar, but a rip off.

Schindler's List. Took a gentile friend who always felt sorry for herself and who didn't think there was anti-semitism in this world. After the movie I told her to think about this movie and these people and remember that they were the lucky ones the next time she felt like her life sucked. Then I reminded her that as a Jew, had it been a different time and different place, this would have been my story but not hers as a gentile.

The Breakfast Club - don't you forget about me. What more can I say?

Chicago - my favorite show as a little girl. As a movie it worked, they really pulled it off. Another movie I would have seen twice back to back had circumstances permitted. And I cannot stand Renee Zellweger.

Search for the Holy Grail - another silly, silly, funny, clever, laugh out loud movie that I never tire of.

The Thomas Crown Affair - (A) the original. so mod! (B) the remake - my kind of caper movie and good chemistry between Brosnon and Russo.

Ocean's Eleven - more fun and style. Not a huge Brad Pitt fan in general, but he was hot hot hot in this movie. Did I mention this was a really fun movie.

Just about any Hitchcock and/or anything with Cary Grant and/or Grace Kelly. I especially liked Dial M for Murder and To Catch a Thief.

The Apartment. Funny and sad.

I could go on.....

So many guilty pleasures, many of which I have seen listed here I would argue should be on the best list, not guilty pleasures.

South Park, Bigger, Longer and Uncut. I saw a private midnight showing with a bunch of other Richmond theatre types, we all laughed our asses off.

This is Spinal Tap

Guffman, Best in Show, Mighty Wind

Rocky movies (I and II could be argued as good movies, III and IV are just pure fluff, V sucked, but the latest wasn't all that bad)

The Last Starfighter, Robert Preston in his last film made the movie better than it should have been

Breakfast Club

Clue

The Dead Poets Society (manipulation to the nth degree, especially to a graduating high school senior going to college to study theatre)

Ferris Buellers Day Off

Glory, okay this is actually a very good movie, but no matter how many times I have seen it, it always takes me at least an hour to get over the fact that Ferris is leading troops.

The Princess Bride

Star Wars (episodes 4-6, or the original trilogy to the non-geek).

Princess Bride is too good for this list Hoosier Steve!!!
And Yeay Debra for a first time comment!! I am glad you are back in town.

Wow, so many movies on these lists I would be proud to consider pleasures. No guilt at all! I think Pee-Wee's Big Adventure is Tim Burton's best film next to Big Fish.

You can't really feel guity about loving a four-star comedy like This Is Spinal Tap or an 11-time Oscar Winner like Titanic. I feel like a movie has to be demonstrably BAD or intentionally stupid to make the guilty pleasures list. Such as:

Rock and Rule
Kung Pow: Enter the Fist
Happy Gilmore
Daredevil
(makes the list because everyone other than me thinks it stinks, but I think it's great)
Die Hard
Strange Brew
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
A Knight's Tale
Mystery Men
Stargate

Love your list Andrew! And while I understand what you are saying about Titanic - I think it blew - it was schmaltzy and pretentious - I am not sure how it won so many Oscars and I am truly embarrassed for enjoying it. That is why it is on my list.
But Spinal Tap is great - agree with you there.
